At the Easel

I have always been fascinated by a blank piece of paper.  There it lies, flawless and unmarred, inviting dreams to unfold and imaginations to be realized on its blinding white surface.  Ever since I could hold a crayon in my hand, I have had an overwhelming desire to create art.

After all, art is a mirror. It grasps the edges of our imagination and the borders of our perceptions, merging and twisting them together until the art that we create with our hands or hang in our homes becomes a reflection of how we see and interact with the world. It becomes our hallmark, our fingerprint. It reveals our beliefs and desires, sharing them deeper than the ability to articulate.

For most of my life, my fingers have itched to express the glory of the Lord through the visual arts. However, as I have moved away from a professional artist career and into linguistics, I've come to the realization that the study of languages is a natural expression of these desires--linguistics uses words reflect and mirror the perceptions of our world and communicate them to others. Visual art will always be a part of my life, and I'm eager to see where the Lord weaves this element into His plan for my life as I serve in Papua New Guinea.

My sister has shared a bit about my journey in the world of visual art in her guest post  and I invite you to also visit my website where I have had the blessing of delighting in the wonders of Creation through pet portraiture and wildlife art.

While I was in the States for my home assignment during the fall of 2013, I began painting some of the people that I've met in my travels in PNG:
